1964–1967 | Early Foundations

  • 1964: At age 15, following his father's passing, the founder moves from a ranch west of Killdeer to Dickinson, ND.
  • Joins Stark Ready Mix under owner Bill Bottinger—first steps in construction through masonry and concrete.
  • Gains field experience on a survey and concrete crew for the ND Department of Transportation.

1967–1970 | Launch & Identity

  • 1967: Starts a drywall business under the name Wallboard Construction.
  • 1968: Establishes Tooz Construction, marking the official entry into general contracting.
  • 1970: Formalizes the name Tooz Construction after securing the first shop and managing full project scopes.

1970s | Expansion Era

  • Rides the momentum of the North Dakota oil boom—construction demand surges.
  • Moves operations from a small shop south of town into the current headquarters.
  • Secures first franchise partnerships:
    • Behlen (1st franchise)
    • Metallic (2nd franchise, distinct from current franchise structure)

1982–1995 | Mobility & Government Work

  • 1982: Oil bust prompts pivot to mobile contracting across ND, SD, MT, WY, and CO.
  • Executes government and military projects including:
    • Sturgis Armory (SD)
    • SD DOT in Buffalo
    • Multiple Strategic Air Command sites nationwide
  • 1995: Operations consolidate back to Dickinson after years of travel.

1995–1998 | Environmental Division & Rebranding

  • 1995: Launches environmental services arm, later named Total Control.
  • 1998: Largest environmental contract to date: the full remediation of the Bismarck Civic Center.
  • This milestone leads to a formal split between Tooz Construction and Total Control for operational clarity.
